In April 2024 Council voted on how the delivery of the approved safety improvements on South Road/Devon Street West would be staged.

What is currently progressing:

The other funded works are nearing completion.

What's happening

NPDC has received funding to deliver the ‘other funded works ‘from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA’s) National Transport Fund and NPDC. It also secured $3.8 million in Transport Choices funding to deliver safety improvements on South Road/Devon Street West

Since the approval of the South Road/Devon St West corridor NPDC have now been advised that no further funding would be released, and that neither raised crossings or in-lane bus stops are to be constructed on state highways.

Given this change in direction, NPDC have revised the design to accommodate this directive and looking to stage the delivery of the safety improvements as we continue to seek additional funding to complete the corridor works.

South Road/Devon St West safety improvements.

  • 2.8km of painted buffered cycle lanes with physical protection at pinch points (amount to be determined, please note that the design shows where some of the physical protection will be placed, but subject to costs we anticipate we will be installing more along the corridor)
  • 1km of shared path from Barrett Road to Belair Avenue
  • 4 crossing upgrades across the State Highway (Countdown, Spotswood Primary, Calvert Road and Belt Road)
  • 11 side road intersection treatments

Construction updates

The remaining construction for South Road/Devon Street West is planned to start from Barrett Road in late Spring/ early Summer 2024. We will be scheduling construction to minimise disruption as much as is reasonably possible. If you have any questions or concerns regarding upcoming works, please email traffic@npdc.govt.nz.
