Pipe blockage causes sewage overflow

Local News Our Work
PUBLISHED: 11 MAR 2025

A late-evening sewer overflow on Pembroke Street was caused by a pipe blocked with wetwipes and fat.

The overflow into the Waimea Stream started at 7.30pm yesterday and stopped at 10pm. NPDC's team has cleaned and sanitised the site.

Warning signs against swimming (for 48 hours after the discharge stopped) and collecting kai (for 28 days) have been put up at affected water bodies.

Please dispose of fat and wetwipes in the red landfill bin - only the three Ps (pee, poo and paper) should be flushed down the toilet.

We’re sorry the overflow has occurred, and we’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the Health New Zealand Taranaki and other recreational users. Keep up with the latest information on the Can I Swim page of our website.

We are in investing $248m over 10 years to fix the district’s plumbing.
