There was a wastewater overflow from a manhole at The Valley shopping centre on Saturday 4 January.
The overflow started at 11.30am and stopped at 1.20pm. The cause of the discharge was fat blocking the sewer.
Council staff responded and cleaned and sanitised the site.
Warning signs against swimming (for 48 hours after the discharge stopped) and collecting kai (for 28 days) have been put up around the Waiwhakaiho River.
We’re sorry this has occurred, and we’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the Health New Zealand Taranaki and other recreational users. Keep up with the latest information on the Can I Swim page of our website.
We are in investing $248m over 10 years to fix the district’s plumbing.
