Second Sewer Discharge at Waiwhakaiho

News
PUBLISHED: 8 JAN 2025

Food fat from a privately-owned sewer pipe caused a wastewater overflow from a manhole at The Valley shopping centre at Waiwhakaiho on Tuesday 7 January.

The overflow started at 9.35am and was stopped shortly afterwards.

It followed a wastewater overflow at the same manhole on Saturday 4 January and both were caused by fat blocking the sewer.

NPDC staff responded and cleaned and sanitised the site and are speaking to food businesses in the area about fat disposal.

Warning signs against swimming (for 48 hours after the discharge stopped) and collecting kai (for 28 days) have been put up around the Waiwhakaiho River.

We’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the Health New Zealand Taranaki and other recreational users.  Keep up with the latest information on the Can I Swim page of our website.

We are investing $295m over the next 10 years to fix the district’s plumbing.
