An investigation is underway into what caused an overflow from NPDC’s waste water system into the Waihowaka Stream in Waitara this afternoon.

The overflow at 234 Parklands Ave started at 1.36pm and ended at around 3.16pm today and has the potential to affect public health. Our team is onsite cleaning and sanitising the area.

As a precaution warning signs against swimming for 48 hours and collecting kai for 28 days have been erected at affected water bodies.

We’re sorry this has occurred, and we’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the Taranaki District Health Board and other recreational users.Keep up with the latest information on the Can I Swim page of our website.

We are investing $248m over 10 years to fix the district’s plumbing.
