There has been a wastewater overflow from a manhole at the St Aubyn and Egmont streets' intersection, in front of the Wind Wand Car Park.
The overflow started just after 9am and has since ceased. Council staff have responded to the incident and traffic management is in place.
The cause of the discharge was pōhutukawa roots blocking the sewer, which have been cleared away.
Warning signs against swimming (for 48 hours after the discharge has ceased) and collecting kai (for 28 days) will be erected at affected water bodies.
We’re sorry this has occurred, and we’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the Taranaki District Health Board and other recreational users. Keep up with the latest information on the Can I Swim page of our website.
We are investing $248m over 10 years to fix the district’s plumbing.
