There is a variety of parking options in New Plymouth's CBD, from on-street to off-street and leased parking spaces.
We are upgrading our ageing parking meters in the city centre, with new modern units that give you a range of payment options:
* Not all machines will be able to take coins but those that do will be clearly marked.
From 17 February 2025, we are moving to pay by plate, which means instead of typing a parking pay number into the machine or your app, you use your vehicle's number plate.
Paying by plate means you can move to another metred car park, without having to pay again, provided you still have time left on your on-street parking session. This does not apply to Warehouse Car Park, Downtown Car Park or leased parking.

The parking meters and Touch N Go machines have an in-built 10-minute courtesy period for you to arrange your payment for parking. If you're going to be less than 10 minutes, then by all means duck in and out free of charge - just be sure to return before the 10 minutes are up!
The parking equipment within the NPDC network is at the end of its operational life and the equipment needs to be replaced.
We are leasing the new parking machines from our supplier and we are making significant savings.
Yes. There will be slight changes when using the PayMyPark app from 17 February, follow the prompts on the app to pay for your parking session.
The meters are touch screen and users will need to key-in their vehicle's number plate. If you do not want to pay at the machine, you can use the PayMyPark app.
We have reduced the fee for card payments at the parking machines to 10 cents per transaction. The supplier has added their own fee for PayMyPark app and Touch N Go - PayStay Guest. See here for more information.
