Many businesses that grow, manufacture, prepare, serve or transport food need to register with a local council or the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).
Food registration and compliance with the Food Act help make sure that food is safe and suitable for people to eat.
MPI leads New Zealand’s food safety system. Their website has lots of information to help food businesses comply with the requirements and regulations. Different requirements apply depending on the type of business you run. Check out the My Food Rules tool to find out the type of plan or programme you need to put in place, and whether you need to register with us.
