Rates rebates

The Department of Internal Affairs runs a rates rebate scheme that in some cases allows for a partial discount on your rates bill for the current rating year (1 July to 30 June) – please note that rebates are not available for previous years.

The scheme is administered by us and generally applies to those on benefits or very low incomes.

There are four factors that determine eligibility:

  1. Where you live.
  2. Your total household income before tax.
  3. The amount of rates you pay.
  4. How many dependents live with you.

A quick way to check is to use the online rebate calculator on the Department of Internal Affairs website

Previous recipients will receive a letter outlining this year's process to apply for a rebate.

If you think you meet the criteria, or you would like help to determine your eligibility please contact us. The best time to do this is in or after August, once the first instalment of rates has been received.

What to bring with you:

  • Your latest rates invoice.
  • Proof of income.
  • A Summary of Income or a Personal Tax Summary certificate from Inland Revenue.
  • Proof of income from Work and Income.
  • If you are self-employed, bring a copy of your complete set of financial accounts, IR3B or IR10.
  • Details of income including bank interest, share earnings and income from other sources.
