Could you put another home on your property?

Some properties, depending on their size and location, can have more than one home without the need for resource consent.

If you’re thinking about putting another home on your existing site alongside the main home, we can help guide you through the rules.

Things to consider include your property zone (eg. rural or residential) and rules around building size and construction methods.

Need help?

We want to make it easy for you to make an informed decision, so if you have any questions or want more information fill in our quick survey and make a booking to speak to one of our experts.

We can help you navigate all the rules, but here are some useful links if you want to look into it yourself:

  • You can find your property and information about it and your property zone on our NPDC E-plan
  • The Building Act 2004 has the building rules. In 2025 some of the rules may change for homes of 60m2 or less.
  • You can build an extra home of any size within the rules but if you’re thinking of building a tiny house, MBIE has some tiny house guidance
  • Find out how much it will cost to connect to local infrastructure like water and roads in the NPDC Development Contributions Policy.
