Earthquake prone buildings

Buildings that have been confirmed as earthquake prone are recorded in a national earthquake-prone buildings register.

This is administered centrally by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

We record this information on the individual property records for the New Plymouth district. Contact us to request information about a property.

Further information about the system for managing earthquake-prone buildings is available on the MBIE website Managing earthquake-prone buildings.

Before 1 July 2017

On 1 July 2017 the Building (earthquake-prone buildings) Amendment Act 2016 replaced the requirement for councils to have their own earthquake policy with a national policy. Before this time New Plymouth District Council maintained a public register of its building assessments. This information remains on the individual property records but we no longer publish it on the NPDC website.
