Keeping our roads in tip-top shape

PUBLISHED: 17 OCT 2024

It’s a busy time on the district's roads with our annual road resealing programme in full swing, as well as major upgrades and safety improvement projects.

Keeping our critical infrastructure in tip-top shape is a big focus of maintenance programme and resealing improves the surface layer of the road and helps to waterproof the road, increasing its longevity especially during the wetter months.  The programme is undertaken by the New Plymouth Infrastructure Partnership (NPDC and Downer)

We care for more than 1300 kilometres of road across the district and typically reseal around 60 kilometres, or about five per cent, each year.

During these works, people are encouraged to use alternate routes where possible and be aware that traffic management may be in place to protect workers and ensure all road users, including people on bikes and pedestrians, can navigate these areas safely.

All dates are weather permitting and subject to change.

Carrington Street between SH45 Powderham St and Victoria Road
24/7 closure from 7pm Tuesday 22 October to 6am Thursday 24 October

Work includes asphalt resurfacing at the intersection of Carrington and Pendarves Street, and patch repairs on Carrington Street.

Contractors will be using Bio Bind, an eco-friendly alternative to bitumen that eliminates the need for petroleum-based materials. It serves as a direct substitute for traditional bitumen, with over 70 per cent of Bio Bind being derived from renewable resources such as trees.

This is the second site that the New Plymouth Infrastructure Partnership have trialled in the district, and we’re excited to play a part in this significant leap in sustainable road construction.

Crews will work around the clock to complete the asphalt resurfacing at the Pendarves and Victoria Road intersections and do patch repairs either side during the closure.  They will return later in the season to complete the resealing.

Tarata Road at Purangi Saddle: 29 October to 31 January 2025

Crews are rebuilding one kilometre of the road, with work including removing existing road material, installing drainage, improving the alignment, and building the new road to improve its safety and resilience for those who use it.

This work is a planned road renewal project following the earthworks project completed over the past two years on the Purangi Saddle.

Because the road is too narrow and winding for traffic to travel safely around the machinery and workers, the road will need to be closed at times to keep everyone safe and complete the as quickly as possible.

Between Tuesday 29 October until Friday 20 December the following will apply:

Safety Improvements at South Road (SH45) from Belair Ave to Barrett Rd: Until 20 December

Work is underway to complete safety improvements on South Road (SH45) from between Barrett Road and Belair Avenue

The work includes upgrades to cycle lanes and footpaths, and the pedestrian crossing outside Spotswood Primary School, and is part of a wider project to improve safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists on this this busy road.

Throughout the project the road will remain open to traffic in both directions, however there will be temporary speed restrictions in place.

Where possible, crews may also complete some of the work at night under stop/go traffic controls.

Work will take place between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Saturday.

Crews will return to the area in the new year to complete the installation of new concrete kerbs under the same traffic controls with similar delays. We will let you know closer to the time when this work is taking place.

Intersection of Gover and Pendarves streets. Until 8 November

Work continues to complete stormwater infrastructure upgrades and install a raised pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Gover and Pendarves streets.

The raised pedestrian crossing is to help improve safety of road users, cyclists and pedestrians, and will be installed on Gover St directly outside Central School.

This intersection is closed 24/7 during the works, although residential access is maintained.
