Swimming alert at Fitzroy Beach

Please don’t swim or gather food at Fitzroy Beach.

Testing of the water at the beach by Taranaki Regional Council on 9 December returned elevated levels of the potentially-harmful bacteria.

We’re sorry this will inconvenience people hoping to spend the weekend at Fitzroy Beach.

Check our Can I Swim page for information on other beaches.

Fat blockage causes sewage overflow

Local News
PUBLISHED: 13 NOV 2024

Congealed fat in a sewer pipe has caused an overflow from a sewer pipe in Hurdon, New Plymouth. The overflow, which ceased about 2pm, went onto a wetland in the Hurdon Street Reserve.

It's possible that some wastewater could have reached the Mangaotuku Stream but anything in the stream would be highly diluted.

The site has been sanitised by NPDC staff.

We’re sorry this overflow has occurred, and we’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the Taranaki District Health Board and recreational groups.

We are investing $248m over 10 years to fix the district’s plumbing.
