NPDC is underway with its summer maintenance on urban and rural roads throughout the district.
Work has started on a $3.3m programme to reseal about 50km across 75 roads between now and April, improving the surface for all users and waterproofing to improve the roads’ longevity.
“This annual work is about ensuring our roads stay in good condition and we choose roads based upon their condition and age,” says NPDC Manager Transport Rui Leitao.
Before resurfacing, we often do other work ahead of time to ensure the road is in reasonable condition, including repairing the road structure and drainage.
“Part of our work is to respond quickly to repairs after storms, especially on our rural roads that are vulnerable to slips and flooding, but a large part of our work involves regular maintenance and planned improvements.”
In total NPDC’s plans to spend $26.9m in 2023/2024 on road repairs, maintenance and renewals – around 80 per cent of the work 51% funded by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
Around 21 sites needed repairing, including Mangaone (Inglewood), Moki (Uruti) and Matapo (Urenui) roads, as well as a new $500,000 retaining wall on Ngāmotu Road to repair a large slip caused by heavy rainfall in May.
On top of that is a number of asphalt repairs across New Plymouth from now until mid-November, including in central Fitzroy and outside the Vogeltown Countdown supermarket.
“These asphalt repairs are substantial projects and require a road closure, detour or stop/go controls – we’ll have the latest information on all these projects on our road works map on NPDC’s website,” says Rui.
