Five-minute overflow at New Plymouth Wastewater Treatment Plant

Local News Public Notice
PUBLISHED: 6 APR 2023

The New Plymouth Wastewater Treatment Plant has had an overflow this morning that lasted five minutes.

The overflow had the potential to discharge to an unnamed tributary of the Waiwhakaiho River and therefore has the potential to affect public health.

Signs have been updated east and west of the Waiwhakaiho River mouth and at Bell Block Beach to warn people to not swim for the next 48 hours. The location of signage and other current water quality warnings can be viewed on the Council’s Can I Swim webpage.

We’re sorry this has occurred, and we’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the local health authority and other recreational users.

We are investing $248m over 10 years to fix the district’s plumbing.
