Swimming alert at Fitzroy Beach

Please don’t swim or gather food at Fitzroy Beach.

Testing of the water at the beach by Taranaki Regional Council on 9 December returned elevated levels of the potentially-harmful bacteria.

We’re sorry this will inconvenience people hoping to spend the weekend at Fitzroy Beach.

The latest Tsunami advisory from Taranaki Civil Defence:

We are expecting the first signs of impact (strong and unusual currents) at approx 12:30pm. Please stay off the beaches and out of the water.
These times are provisional and based on the best information available. Arrival times may be as much as one hour later and may be adjusted in subsequent messages.
There is no land threat at this stage so there is no need to evacuate.
Strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges near the shore are expected.
Stay out of the water. Stay off beaches and shore areas. Do not go sightseeing.
