Main Street Fund

This fund aims to enhance the vibrancy and character central business centres across the district.

Main Street Buildings

It supports commercial property owners, or their tenants, to improve the look of their buildings making them more attractive to potential customers and tenants.

Grants can contribute up to one third of the total project cost for:

  • Street art and murals
  • Façade painting, including signage
  • Installation of decorative lighting, verandas and appropriate architectural features
  • Removal of unsightly features that do not fit the style of the building
  • Repairs to architectural details, masonry, and other external features. 

Applications open Monday, 28 April - Sunday 25 May 2025.

What you need to know before applying 

Who can apply? 

Building owners or tenants with the building owner’s written approval. 

Buildings must be in the CBD areas of New Plymouth District. 

Exclusions 

If you have a heritage listed building, applications must first be made to the Built Heritage Protection Fund. Work that has received funding from the Built Heritage Protection Fund is not eligible to receive funding from the Main Street Building Fund. 

Funding length

Projects must be completed within 12 months of funding being approved. 

How do I apply? 

Applications are made through our online funding portal SmartyGrants. You will need to log in and fill out an application form. 

For facade painting and repairs, please include two quotes for completion of the work and a proposed colour scheme for any painting. 

For street art and murals, please include a mock-up of the intended design. 

When will I know the outcome of my application?

After submitting your application, you will receive an automated email confirming that it has been received. 

Applications will be assessed by staff. Proposed facade colours and artwork may be subject to approval. 

You will receive an email letting you know the outcome of your application by Friday 6 June 2025. 

How will do I get the funds?

If your application is successful, we will be in touch to ask you to send us an invoice. 

After your project. 

Please email us a photo of the completed work and copies of invoices and receipts within 12 months of funding being approved.
